Retrospective: Hology at Malmö Game Week

From 30 August to 31 August 2025, Hology Interactive/Hology Engine participated at Malmö Game Week's Indie Corner to showcase the new game Deep Clash for playtesting. There were around 11,000 visitors to the event that weekend, and the stream had 380,000 viewers.

Deep Clash is an underwater survival shooter designed for release on web platforms in the near future. The goal was to create a fun, casual game set underwater, where players control a submarine that can aim and shoot at mysterious creatures attacking it. Deep Clash showcases several capabilities of Hology Engine, including VFX for projectiles, environmental building, and an AI enemy system. During the Malmö Game Week, we also introduced our engine to other indie game developers who are interested in how we made the web game.

There were many families at the event, as well as anime fans, board game enthusiasts, and gamers. We had a wide range of different populations coming to try our game, from families, children, high school and university students, to people who had graduated.

There are several reasons why, as game engine makers, we also started producing games.

1. Real World Testing and Improvement

Making games internally allows us and our collaborators to try our own tools, finding bugs, pain points, and missing features through authentic production use cases. This cycle ensures the engine is robust, intuitive, and suitable for game teams, leading to a more reliable and competitive product for other developers.

2. Showcase

Games built internally demonstrate the engine’s capabilities in a concrete, visual manner, serving as proof of concept and marketing material. We are building different types of games to showcase what kind of games our engines are suitable for.

3. Tool and Workflow Optimization

Developing games alongside the engine pushes us to streamline pipelines, improve documentation, and design better tools for real production situations, making it more friendly to other studios and indie game developers.

4. Making Our Vision Come to Life

We also have our dreams and visions of what kind of games we want to make. After making a game engine with web technologies that we love and are familiar with, it is time for us to also make games that we have thought of, and to show you that you can do it too!

Make sure to follow our social media to stay updated on when our games will be published!
